The obverse features St George knight slaying a dragon. However, the traditional Benedetto Pistrucci design was replaced by a brand new image. To celebrate Elisabeth II ‘s Diamond Jubilee, this new picture of St George was created by Paul Day. As the artist explains himself :
“I have chosen to opt for a romantic version of the St George and the Dragon theme — a medieval knight of Arthurian legend, something quite traditional and true to our culture.”
Paul Day
“I have given the dragon a more threatening attitude and size,” Day continued, “so that it represents a real menace: its wings have a harp-like quality, in contrast to the realism of the knight and horse, while the lance divides the surface into two.”
Paul Day
The reverse displays the fourth portrait of her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II, facing right. The inscription ” ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REGINA FID DEF ” surrounds the Queen’s profile. The reverse design was created by Ian Rank-Broadley.
